David was admitted to practice in 1984 and joined Simmons Wolfhagen in 1986, becoming a partner in 1988.
David is the head of the local government and general litigation sections and provides advice and practises as an advocate. His particular focus is on local government law, planning and environment law, and the resolution of commercial disputes.
David and his team often deal with building disputes, disputes over the use of land, commercial contract interpretations and dispute resolutions, as well as the law concerning strata titles.
David appears as counsel in the Federal Court of Australia, Supreme Court of Tasmania and in state and federal tribunals. He also appears in the Resource Management and Planning Appeals Tribunal and the Resource Planning and Development Commission for Councils, developers and third parties.
David is a member of the Legal Practice Section of the Law Council of Australia and Australasian Legal Practice Management Association. He is a past chair of Tasmanian Young Lawyers, past vice-chair of Australian Young Lawyers, past editor of the Australasian Law Management Journal and past committee member of the General Practice Section of the Law Council of Australia.
He is a barrister and solicitor in the Supreme Court of Tasmania and the High Court of Australia.
Outside his practice David is a Board member of Oak Tasmania, The Hutchins School and The Fahan School.
David’s spare-time interest is offshore yacht racing – he has competed in 11 Sydney-Hobarts and in numerous Sydney-Gold Coast and Sydney-Mooloolabah offshore races.
